Description of the work
Description of the work
The work undoubtedly depicts the figure of Saint George, bearing all his main iconographic attributes. The saint is depicted as a knight intent on slaying a dragon, a specific reference to the episode in the Golden Legend that featured Saint George. Saint George was a Christian martyr, originally from Cappadocia. Raised in the Christian religion, he was a valiant soldier. Although he was a member of the Emperor's guard, he was martyred by Diocletian.
The panel consciously draws on the Byzantine tradition, reworking it with a more contemporary sensibility, given its late 19th-century date. Byzantine art retains all its strongly archaic stylistic features, aimed at exalting the supernatural and divine nature of what is depicted. For this reason, the panel exhibits a marked anti-naturalism, still of medieval origin. The facial features are generalized, and the representation tends to be abstract. However, we can see that, despite the persistence of archaic Byzantine stylistic features, the artist opens his own language to a partial exploration of naturalism. The scene is not fixed and hieratic, as in traditional Russian icons, but presents a dynamic character. And, above all, the gold background is replaced by a landscape.
The artist who created this work is certainly linked to the tradition of Russian icon painting, whose stylistic features he still retains. However, he displays a certain openness to a more naturalistic representational style. His work, therefore, can be considered a very interesting document on the evolution of Russian-Byzantine painting over the centuries.
