Description of the work
Description of the work
Animal depictions in art have ancient origins, even appearing in primitive cave paintings. For religious reasons, various types of animals appear in the works of various ancient civilizations. It was especially in the Middle Ages, within the International Gothic style, that animal depictions became widespread as true life portraits, both within works of art and in notebooks of drawings and sketches. The presence of animals as subjects in art remained constant until the contemporary era. In this work in particular, we find ourselves faced with a typically late-nineteenth-century veristic context, in which, in addition to scenes inspired by the rural world, portraits of domestic animals were also popular subjects, especially in small-format works. These paintings served artists well as a means of studying in detail the very animals that would later appear in choral scenes.
This ram's head is distinguished by a remarkable refinement of execution, reaching the highest levels of naturalism. The anonymous artist thus fits into a verist school of painting, specialized in depictions of animals, executed with great attention to detail. This small canvas is a perfect example of truly verist pictorial quality, not only in its subject but also in its form. The painter manages to create an image of perfect and complete naturalism, and the representation is extremely vivid and rich in anatomical detail. The almost hyperrealistic perfection of the final result actually depends on an exceptional flexibility in the pictorial layering, with a hatching in keeping with late-nineteenth-century painting styles. Thus, despite the precise representation, the artist does not lose the distinctive features of an exquisitely verist poetics. Also striking is the luminous cut that leaves the right panel in shadow, while maintaining the composition's complete tonal coherence.
From an analysis of these works, we can hypothesize that the artist was a prominent exponent of the late nineteenth-century Verist school. The choice of subject most likely draws on the examples provided by artists from the Abruzzo-Neapolitan area such as the Palizzi brothers or Francesco Paolo Michetti. Indeed, they too favored animal representations in genre scenes inspired by the rural world. Our painter's technique, like that of his models, is truly extraordinary in achieving a perfect naturalistic rendering in a pictorial style imbued with immediacy and freshness.
