Description of the work
Description of the work
Animal portraits in art have ancient origins, even appearing in primitive cave paintings. For religious reasons, various types of animals appear in the works of various ancient civilizations. It was especially in the Middle Ages, within the International Gothic style, that animal depictions became widespread as true life portraits, both within works of art and in notebooks of drawings and sketches. The presence of animals as subjects in art remained constant until the contemporary era.
Anton Rooskens's artistic language fully reflects the stylistic prerogatives of the Cobra group, of which he was a member for a time. Essentially, his aesthetic can be defined as expressionist, due to the brutal formal synthesis that permeates the subject. Cobra's distinctive feature is the rhythm of his work, with these distorted images created with a simple, coarse black line. The representation verges on total abstraction. The artist displays a strong taste for the primitivist art of Asian and African peoples and for bold, bright colors.
Anton Rooskens (Griendtsveen, March 16, 1906 - Amsterdam, February 28, 1976) was a self-taught Dutch painter. He was briefly involved with the Cobra group. Rooskens initially painted in an expressionist style, clearly influenced by Vincent van Gogh. From 1945 (after moving to Amsterdam), his works became experimental. Influenced by the simple and austere forms of folk art (particularly the more archaic images of New Guinea, Africa, and India), he developed his own form of expression, which consisted of a colorful interplay of lines and shapes.
