Description of the work
Description of the work
Flowers as an independent subject began to appear in still lifes, a genre that emerged in the early 17th century. Subsequently, painters, especially the Impressionists, increasingly focused on the floral world as an extraordinary opportunity to capture vibrant colors and light. Thus, flowers were depicted not only in vases, but also immersed in their natural landscape. While initially a pretext for painters to attempt a photographic reproduction of reality, with contemporary art, the subject of flowers also became a way of interpreting reality. The artist Antonella Gamba practices a very classical style of painting, in which, among the various themes developed, the traditional one of the flower vase.
Antonella Gamba's pictorial language is essentially figurative, aiming to represent reality, yet always with a subtle emotional and poetic edge. Indeed, the artist necessarily begins by recording sensory data. The object is carefully and meticulously described, in a fresh and lively narrative, thanks in part to a penchant for bright colors. Indeed, Antonella Gamba is certainly an artist who seeks to decisively define her works. For this reason, while realistically describing the object, the painter favors the application of color over drawing. In this way, the representation, with its impressionistic and immediate connotations, becomes even more alive and vibrant. Antonella Gamba's brushstrokes are swift, and in outlining the elements, she simultaneously imbues them with atmospheric and luminous effects.
Antonella Gamba was a Tuscan painter, born in Cascina in 1909 and who passed away in 2012 at the age of 102. Antonella Gamba trained in Pisa, under the guidance of masters Santi, Marangoni, and Ragghianti. Her career was filled with satisfaction and success, including: the exhibition with Salvador Dalí, solo exhibitions throughout Italy, monographs dedicated to her work, and numerous awards, from the Tetradramma d'oro prize in Rome to the silver medal from the Society of Arts, Sciences, and Letters in Paris.
