Description of the work
Description of the work
Themes related to astronomy or science fiction in art can, in many cases, be traced back to the typical aesthetics of Surrealist art, where the existence of other worlds or parallel dimensions can be connected to our subconscious. However, when science fiction becomes a celebration of technology, it's impossible not to identify its origins in Futurism, which made the celebration of progress one of its main themes. Coinciding with the development of the science fiction genre in cinema, around the 1960s, some painters also began to explore this theme in art, such as the celebrated Chesley Bonestell.
Returning to the Surrealist aesthetic, we can see how Antonello Rizza's paintings on the theme of the Universe always present a paradoxically hyperrealist style. In this canvas, however, likely driven by its small size, we see a more cursive style. The subject is rendered with quick brushstrokes, with a textured color determining the density of the volumes.
Antonello Rizza was born in Noto in 1926 and passed away in Rome in 2012. Nicknamed "The Painter of the Universe," his paintings focused primarily on astrophysics, which he interpreted with a hyperrealist figurative style. His name appeared in the Bolaffi Catalogue in 1975 and 1978. A permanent exhibition of his works has been installed in the municipal library of Noto.
