Antonello Rizza - Universe

Themes related to astronomy or science fiction in art can, in many cases, be traced back to the typical aesthetics of Surrealist art, where the existence of other worlds or parallel dimensions can be connected to our subconscious. However, when science fiction becomes a celebration of technology, its origins inevitably lie in Futurism, which made the celebration of progress one of its central themes. Coinciding with the development of the science fiction genre in cinema, around the 1960s, some painters also began to explore this theme in art, such as the celebrated Chesley Bonestell.

Constantly referencing Surrealist aesthetics, we can note how Antonello Rizza's paintings dedicated to the theme of the Universe always present a paradoxically hyperrealist style. In this sketch, however, a strong experimental character prevails formally. Indeed, the brushstrokes executed in this work are much more painterly than those in Antonello Rizza's usual production. Thus, the brushstrokes are charged with luminous vibrations, and the artist even achieves a pronounced synthesis of forms. Despite this, a certain illusory quality, typically Surrealist, prevails, shaping the overall character of the work.

Antonello Rizza was born in Noto in 1926 and passed away in Rome in 2012. Nicknamed "The Painter of the Universe," his paintings focused primarily on astrophysics, which he interpreted with a hyperrealist figurative style. His name appeared in the Bolaffi Catalogue in 1975 and 1978. A permanent exhibition of his works has been installed in the municipal library of Noto.
