Description of the work
Description of the work
The subject of the typical mask (in this case Pulcinella) can be considered a variation on the clown theme. Clowns or masks were extremely popular subjects among genre painters of the 1970s and 1980s. Many artists dedicated much of their careers to depicting this theme, Romano Mussolini being a prime example.
In this painting, painter Antonio Asturi demonstrates a pictorial conception inspired by post-impressionism. In a composition entirely based on the tonal and expressive values of color, the paint is distributed in dense touches of paint that synthesize the subject through a cursive and immediate technique. The resulting representation is fluid and iridescent in its bright, luminous colors.
Antonio Asturi was a painter originally from Vico Equense, where he was born in 1904 and passed away in 1986. Self-taught, after a brief Futurist interlude he returned to figurative painting, focusing primarily on cityscapes and scenes of bourgeois life. He was deeply fascinated by the paintings of Antonio Mancini. In addition to oil, he also used tempera and Indian ink extensively.
