Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.
A beautiful work, an example of Antonio Cannata's oeuvre. Cannata is an artist distinguished by a simultaneously naturalistic and lyrical vision of the landscape. This aesthetic is achieved through a skillful use of the expressive qualities of color. The naturalistic rendering is perfect in a composition of great harmony and balance, based on a diagonal line. The space is delineated through color, in a progressive gradation of tones. The writing is partly cursive, capturing all the light vibrations on the road and the vegetation.
Antonio Cannata was born in Polistena in 1895 and died in Rome in 1960. He was a self-taught painter. He began his career in Naples, where he achieved widespread popularity, becoming part of the city's artistic scene. In addition to exhibiting his work in numerous solo exhibitions in Italy, he participated in three Venice Biennales.
