Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.
A master of graphic and engraving techniques, Antonio Carbonati displays a remarkable drawing technique. The scene has been inserted within a coherent spatial box, in which the more distant elements in the background gently fade into the atmosphere. The artist's skill in reproducing every minute detail in a lively, dynamic, and narrative narrative is remarkable. The final result is a composition of refined, miniature precision that leverages an extraordinary hatching technique. The rapidity of the strokes ensures a freshness of execution while simultaneously distributing the shadows and lights that define the space.
Antonio Carbonati was born in Mantua in 1893 and died in Rome in 1956. He was a painter, but also a renowned engraver. After studying at the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice, under Ettore Tito, he furthered his studies in Rome with Giulio Aristide Sartorio. Having settled in Rome, he devoted himself to painting, using exclusively the etching technique, and from 1917 he created numerous views of the city, later purchased by the municipality. Two years later, he went to Paris, where he created a series of etchings, which were purchased for exhibition at the Carnavalet Museum. After returning to Italy, from 1921 onwards he created a series of paintings depicting views of Italy's most important cities. In Paris, he was awarded a gold medal in 1925 at the International Exhibition in which he exhibited some of his works. He participated in the Exhibition of Italian Art from 1800 to Today, held in Berlin in 1937, and in the first seven editions of the Rome Quadrennial.
