Description of the work
Description of the work
The iconography of this work certainly has allegorical meanings and can be defined, in some ways, as symbolist precisely because of its allusion to underlying meanings. It is a type of subject that can be traced back to the artistic language of late nineteenth-century painters such as Moreau, Bocklin, or Puvis des Chavannes, who, despite using a substantially figurative language, developed intellectually complex iconographies, full of symbolic and allegorical references.
This print is a prime example of Antonio Carta's artistic language, based on a simplification of phenomenal reality in an almost surreal way. In this case, the artist creates an impossible space: the walls indicate an illogical perspective and the road follows an implausible curve. The bold black lines and the almost illustration-like style of the representation are characteristic.
Antonio Carta was born in Vicenza in 1928. He worked until his thirties as a laborer and craftsman and was a self-taught artist. He later became an art teacher in private and state schools. In 1989, the city of Vicenza dedicated a major retrospective exhibition to him.
