Description of the work
Description of the work
The work is an abstract composition. "Abstract" derives from the Latin term "abstrahere," which means to extract or draw out. The process of abstraction, in fact, consists of eliminating the particular and individual aspects of an object to derive a universal concept. From Kandinsky to Mondrian, from Pollock to Mirò, many painters have pushed the process of abstraction to the limit in their works, paradoxically creating pure forms and pure colors that do not exist in nature, or translating their emotions and instincts into images.
In this masterful work, artist Antonio Corpora demonstrates his openness to an abstract language in which phenomenal reality is reconstructed through elegant geometric stylization. Thus, with the refinement found in some of Paul Klee's compositions, a landscape is transformed into a balanced system of horizontal and vertical lines. Formally, the monochromatic composition is executed with a subtle graphic style that accentuates the symbolic, and therefore enigmatic, nature of the work.
Antonio Corpora was born in Tunis in 1909 and died in Rome in 2004. He studied under Gustave Moreau in Paris and Felice Carena in Florence. In Paris, he came into contact with the Post-Impressionist, Cubist, and Fauvist schools. In 1939, he held his first solo exhibition, and began to explore the Italian abstract art of Fontana, Reggiani, and Soldato. In 1945, he settled in Rome and met Guttuso. He participated in several editions of the Venice Biennale. Corpora began with figurative art, then moved on to abstract and Post-Impressionist compositions in 1934, and finally to Art Informel in the 1970s.
