The urban landscape in the works of Antonio De Vity is closely linked to Impressionism. This movement, born in the second half of the 19th century, focused on painting from life, therefore en plein air, depicting city life amidst parties, balls, and the streets of Paris. Through their paintings, the city becomes modern, boasting new attractions every day, struggling amidst the chaos and frenzy of the city. De Vity himself became a spokesperson for that bourgeois painting, drawing on French aesthetics, also informed by his connection to the city that would welcome him for a period of his life.

The rapid, hatched brushstrokes, combined with painterly tones that create a sparkling atmosphere, hark back to expressionist representation. The volumes and shapes of the city street are imbued with pastel tones that juxtapose the leaden sky the painter presents us with. It is precisely this reworking of the French tradition that transforms the atmosphere of the city with its crowded streets, stimulating our senses.

Antonio De Vity, the pseudonym of Umberto Marone, was born in Naples in 1901. He began studying painting in his hometown, but his stay in Paris, where he attended the Ecole des Beaux Arts, was crucial to his development. Upon returning to Italy, he founded his own school, which became an important reference point for artists from the South. He died in 1993.
