Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with research into space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; up to the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism. For the artist Antonio De Vity, whose pictorial production consists mostly of Parisian cityscapes,
It is less common to portray a naturalistic landscape.
This work by Antonio De Vity stands out for its landscape painting, in which he seeks a distinctive view, imbued with a unique lyricism. Hence, his penchant for picturesque views and evocative framing. Formally, this translates into an extremely lively and dynamic pictorial style that ensures freshness and immediacy of execution. His brushstrokes, therefore, are characterized by a decidedly cursive touch, made up of sudden flickers, effectively capturing the vibrations of light on objects. This is particularly evident in the execution of tonal transitions that measure space and the variations of light on buildings or in the reflections that reverberate off the surface of the water. The entire composition is imbued with a calm naturalism and a freshness deriving from the artist's technical prowess.
Antonio De Vity is the pseudonym of Umberto Marone, born in Naples in 1901 and died in 1993. He began studying painting in his hometown, but his stay in Paris, where he attended the Ecole des Beaux Arts, was crucial to his development. Upon returning to Italy, he founded his own school, which became an important reference point for artists from the South.
