Description of the work
Description of the work
The subject of this work falls within the realm of still life, a genre first developed in the early 17th century. It consists of the depiction of compositions of inanimate subjects, most often flowers or fruit. While initially it was an opportunity for painters to experiment with a naturalistic or photographic reproduction of reality, with contemporary art, the "Still Life" also becomes a way of interpreting reality. Indeed, as happened, for example, in the Cubist avant-garde or in Giorgio Morandi, the in-depth exploration of objects was aimed at a conceptual representation, taken beyond the mere sensory element. This work by Antonio Debidda, part of the famous "Secret Encounters" cycle, demonstrates a contemporary interpretation of the still life subject, where, instead of fruit or crockery, the composition features clothes draped haphazardly on a chair. The artist places the most intimate objects on display to signal a presence, thus giving the still life a decidedly existential character.
Painter Antonio Debidda's interpretation of the works from the "Secret Encounters" series is resolved through a pictorial style balanced between realism and an expressionistic rendering of the subject. Debidda, in fact, is faithful to the tangible data before his eyes and presents it to us as it is, in its pure essentiality. However, the power of this raw and genuine representation is fueled by the artist's pictorial style, which, paradoxically, transforms reality itself in an expressionistic manner. His painting is highly structural, synthesizing objects through color. The clothes, casually draped over the chair, are rendered with a broad, dense brushstroke that highlights their essentiality, yet in a pictorial language vibrant with existentialism. What emerges is a stark and minimal image, yet extremely alive and mobile, thanks in part to the effect of the light striking the scene. Furthermore, the representation is organized within a complex space, not univocal, but constructed according to different perspectives and viewpoints. This allows Debidda to investigate the objects even more deeply according to a concrete realism that shows a certain inspiration from the work of Renato Guttuso.
Antonio Debidda was born in 1940 in Bortigiadas. He spent five years in Martis, remaining until the age of seventeen in Calangianus, where he essentially began his artistic apprenticeship. This was a period of promising amateurism, which already revealed a promising talent for painting. In Perfugas, where he lived for ten years and also served as a city councilor, he further refined his technique. Debidda completed his training in Rome, with Ludovisi and Ziveri, and earned a qualification to teach Art Education in middle schools and Drawing and Art History in high schools. He teaches in middle schools in various towns in the province of Sassari. Many critics have studied Antonio Debidda's work, including Vittorio Sgarbi, who edited the texts for the exhibition “Omissis” at the Masedu Museum of Contemporary Art in Sassari.
