Description of the work
Description of the work
A popular iconography throughout the history of Western art, the Crucifixion has its origins in the early Christian era and has developed over the centuries, culminating in the most recent expressions of contemporary art. The traditional iconography of Jesus on the cross has countless variations, from the simplest, featuring only the crucified Christ, to the version accompanied by the "mourners," the Madonna and Saint John the Evangelist. In the Middle Ages, Crucifixion scenes began to become increasingly elaborate: thieves' crosses were added, and gradually more and more figures were added, until they became the subject of large choral scenes. It is often accompanied by symbolic elements, such as the presence of the sun and moon or Adam's skull beneath Christ's cross (which signifies the redemptive action of Christ's Passion in the face of original sin).
The painter Antonio Manzoni developed a highly complex and personal artistic language. His style undoubtedly draws on Expressionism, drawing particular reference to the German movement Die Brucke, from which he borrows the brutal synthesis of the subject matter and the prevalence of figures with broken, angular forms. Manzoni's figures are perfectly in tune with an Expressionist aesthetic, traversed by taut lines and rigid contours that, through figuration, allow them to express intense states of mind. Antonio Manzoni also stands out for the complexity of his highly elaborate painted surface. The artist has developed a remarkable technique that allows him to lay down a dense, textured color on the support. On this layer, the painter can then intervene with more calligraphic interventions, using less vigorous gestures. All this to make the work even more expressive.
Antonio Manzoni is a painter who has developed his own personal style. He has successfully combined an expressionist-inspired language with a complex process of pictorial application.
