Description of the work
Description of the work
The work can be defined as a genre scene, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious ones.
In this ink drawing, Antonio Massari demonstrates his openness to a synthetic language in which phenomenal reality is reconstructed through elegant stylization. Reality is thus transformed into a balanced system of lines. Formally, the monochromatic composition is executed with a slender graphic style that accentuates the work's symbolic nature and the immediacy of its fresh execution. The definition of formal values, however, is aided by a denser hatching in shading.
Antonio Massari was born in Lecce in 1932 but lives and works in Milan. He has been exhibiting since 1959 and boasts a vibrant career, with over 150 solo shows in Italy and abroad and countless group shows and art events. He has participated in every edition of Artefiera Bologna since 1980 and in the Milanese Miart since 1994. His works are included in the collections of the Frank V. de Bellis Collection in San Francisco, the Civic Gallery of Contemporary Art in Ascoli Piceno, the Pinacoteca Comunale Torre Estensi in Copparo, the Civic Gallery of Modern Art in Gallarate, the Carlo V Museum in Lecce, and the Bagnacavallo Museum.
