Description of the work
Description of the work
The painting can be defined as a genre scene, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious ones.
The painting is a classic example of Antonio Munciguerra's pictorial style. Figuration is reduced and made more expressive through a process that primarily involves color. Munciguerra's application of color transforms the entire reality into a sulfurous and impalpable dimension. The subjects thus become evanescent, like presences fused with the vaporous atmosphere. Everything is extremely mobile thanks to Munciguerra's unique painting technique.
Antonio Munciguerra was born in Potenza in 1931. He trained in Turin and Piedmont, where he frescoed several churches. In the 1960s, he gained a reputation for himself through his extensive exhibitions. Initially abstract, he later developed his own artistic language, featuring evanescent atmospheres and elongated forms. His works are held at the Antwerp Civic Museum (Belgium), the National Cavalry Museum in Pinerolo (Turin), and in important public and private collections in Italy and abroad.
