Description of the work
Description of the work
Animal depictions in art have ancient origins, appearing even in primitive cave paintings. For religious reasons, various types of animals appear in the works of various ancient civilizations. It was especially in the Middle Ages, within the International Gothic style, that animal depictions became widespread as true portraits, both within works of art and in notebooks of drawings and sketches. The presence of animals as subjects in art remained constant until the contemporary era. In the case of this sculpture by Antonio Nocera, the depiction of a dove takes on the precise symbolic connotation of a wish for peace among all the peoples of the world. The symbolism derives from the biblical episode of the dove that, bringing Noah an olive branch, indicated the end of the Great Flood.
The bas-relief is a prime example of Antonio Nocera's style. The artist maintains a connection to phenomenal reality, yet emphasizes it with an expressionist and symbolist perspective. Antonio Nocera's compositions are highly stylised, resulting in the entire structure of the work being defined by a combination of very pronounced lines and a sinuous flow. This also gives rise to the elegant deformations of the subjects, who become elongated and lose their physiognomic features. The bas-relief achieves a perfect compositional harmony between the smoothness of the forms and the vibrations conveyed by Nocera's sculptural approach.
Antonio Nocera was born in Caivano in 1949 and trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples. His artistic career developed primarily in Milan, where he lived since 1970 and frequented the artistic circles of Brera and the Navigli area. His fame is now international, thanks to numerous exhibitions around the world where his paintings have been featured. His themes are drawn from fairy tales and legends, creating symbolic subjects that resonate with contemporary reality.
