Description of the work
Description of the work
In the history of art, a clear distinction can often be made between figurative and abstract stylistic movements. However, when an artist's goal is to represent an object that resonates with phenomenal reality but is also charged with hidden and symbolic meaning, this boundary can become blurred. Symbolism and Expressionism are emblematic stylistic movements in their conceptual interpretation of reality, with an iconic rendering of images and a symbolic interpretation in the use of color.
The bas-relief is a prime example of Antonio Nocera's style. The artist maintains a connection with phenomenal reality, but emphasizes it with an expressionist and symbolist perspective. Antonio Nocera's compositions are highly stylised, resulting in the entire structure of the work being defined by a combination of very pronounced, sinuous lines. In this case, the stylization has an archaic effect. Nocera seeks to recapture an expressiveness typical of, for example, Byzantine icons. Colour plays a minor role, compact and devoid of pictorial effects; it is the perfect complement to Nocera's design.
Antonio Nocera was born in Caivano in 1949 and trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples. His artistic career developed primarily in Milan, where he lived since 1970 and frequented the artistic circles of Brera and the Navigli area. His fame is now international, thanks to numerous exhibitions around the world where his paintings have been featured. His themes are drawn from fairy tales and legends, creating symbolic subjects that resonate with contemporary reality.
