Description of the work
Description of the work
This silkscreen print is part of a series of works by Antonio Nocera inspired by the French Revolution.
This series exemplifies Antonio Nocera's style. The artist maintains a connection to phenomenal reality, but emphasizes it through an expressionist and symbolist lens. Antonio Nocera's compositions are highly stylised, resulting in the entire structure of the work being defined by a combination of very pronounced lines and a sinuous flow. This also gives rise to the elegant deformations of the subjects, who become elongated and lose their facial features. The stylized and iconic figures, with their abstract facial features and the fixed nature of the composition, express the symbolic nature of the scene. Colour plays a minor role; it is compact, devoid of pictorial effects; with its nuanced tones, it perfectly complements Nocera's drawing.
Antonio Nocera was born in Caivano in 1949 and trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples. His artistic career developed primarily in Milan, where he lived since 1970 and frequented the artistic circles of Brera and the Navigli area. His fame is now international, thanks to the numerous exhibitions in which his paintings have been shown around the world. His themes often draw from fairy tales and legends, creating symbolic subjects that resonate with contemporary reality. Much of Antonio Nocera's work is inspired by sacred art.
