Description of the work
Description of the work
The subject of this sculpture is inspired by the figure of the Virgin Mary, arguably one of the most popular iconographies in the history of both Western and Eastern art. The Madonna has appeared since the dawn of medieval painting and remained a constant subject as long as religious themes dominated artistic production (that is, until the 19th century, when themes inspired by everyday life began to be introduced). Antonio Nocera's interpretation of the Madonna in this bas-relief reflects the fundamental tenets of his artistic practice. Indeed, the sacred aspect is exalted through an expressionist language that takes on specifically spiritual connotations.

The work is a prime example of Antonio Nocera's style, which is also consistent in his sculpture. The artist maintains a connection with phenomenal reality, but the sensory data are forced into an expressionist and symbolist perspective. Antonio Nocera's compositions are highly stylised, resulting in the entire structure of the work being defined by a combination of very pronounced lines and a sinuous flow. This also results in the elegant deformations of the subjects, who become elongated and lose their physiognomic features. The sculpture has a highly pictorial character, with a highly worked surface that leaves few smooth areas. All this serves to accentuate the expressiveness of the composition.
Antonio Nocera was born in Caivano in 1949 and trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples. His artistic career developed primarily in Milan, where he lived since 1970 and frequented the artistic circles of Brera and the Navigli area. His fame is now international, thanks to the numerous exhibitions in which his paintings have been shown around the world. His themes often draw from fairy tales and legends, creating symbolic subjects that resonate with contemporary reality. Much of Antonio Nocera's work is inspired by sacred art.
