Description of the work
Description of the work
The drawing depicts a female nude. The study of anatomy and the female body has long been a part of Western painting and sculpture, but only since the early nineteenth century has it been possible to move beyond the pretext of mythology and allegory to depict the body in drawings and paintings intended to transcend the studio. If even before then, the female body was a means of revealing the beauty and harmony of form, only now is it being brought into the human and mundane sphere and can be depicted without prejudice.
The drawing demonstrates a quick and confident stroke. The nude style recalls the academic studies students undertake in academies to approach the depiction of the human body. Often, these lessons involve a model, and the students' task is to live-render the person in front of them, assuming various positions. In this case, however, we go beyond these studies; we note that, despite the persistence of visual analysis, the drawing is precise and firm, with a confident rendering of the line that demonstrates the skill of the hand tracing the forms. The painter manages to give the drawing a three-dimensional feel by bringing the lines closer together and juxtaposing them, or by placing them perpendicularly for the darker areas.
Antonio Notari was born in 1940 in Naples. He began his artistic career at the Filippo Palizzi Art Institute in his hometown. He studied under Carlo Striccoli and began regularly visiting Guido Casciaro's studio, where he learned and experimented with traditional and ancient techniques. He subsequently continued his education at the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples, studying with great masters such as Alberto Ziveri and Giuseppe Capogrossi.
Active both as a sculptor and as a painter in every medium he shapes, be it color on canvas or bronze, pictorialism and plasticity interpenetrate, creating a lyrical overall composition that reveals his knowledge and the breadth of interests that push his art in ever new directions.
During his career he exhibited his works in national and international exhibitions, during which he received numerous prizes and awards.
His activity is not limited to painting alone, but he is also active as a sculptor, engraver, mosaicist, fresco artist and restorer, the restoration for which he is best known being that of the eighteenth-century ceilings of the Ministry of Posts in Rome.
Notari currently lives and works in Sora, Lazio.
