Description of the work
Description of the work
The subject lies somewhere between figurative and abstract, stimulating the viewer's imagination while also leaving a mystical quality to the overall effect that everyone can interpret in their own way. The drawing gradually unfolds as one pauses to focus on its details. At first glance, it appears to be a series of chiaroscuro lines shaping the space; only then do the figures begin to separate from the background. In the foreground, a figure appears to be running away from a nocturnal urban landscape, one hand covering its mouth. From the shadows, a second figure emerges, almost like a ghost running through the night.
The drawing style is characterized by a rapid, graphic, and clear line tracing. Antonio Notari, known as the "poet of signs and color," here shows us his side dedicated to signs, to the gestural component. Throughout his career, in addition to his numerous sculptures and paintings, he also became famous for his drawings and graphic art. The mastery of such a drawing lies in the successful creation of three-dimensionality and perspective with an economy of lines. Thanks to parallel and perpendicular lines, the painter creates areas of shadow and light that shape the scene.
Antonio Notari was born in 1940 in Naples. He began his artistic career at the Filippo Palizzi Art Institute in his hometown. He studied under Carlo Striccoli and began regularly visiting Guido Casciaro's studio, where he learned and experimented with traditional and ancient techniques. He subsequently continued his education at the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples, studying with great masters such as Alberto Ziveri and Giuseppe Capogrossi.
Active both as a sculptor and as a painter in every medium he shapes, be it color on canvas or bronze, pictorialism and plasticity interpenetrate, creating a lyrical overall composition that reveals his knowledge and the breadth of interests that push his art in ever new directions.
During his career he exhibited his works in national and international exhibitions, during which he received numerous prizes and awards.
His activity is not limited to painting alone, but he is also active as a sculptor, engraver, mosaicist, fresco artist and restorer, the restoration for which he is best known being that of the eighteenth-century ceilings of the Ministry of Posts in Rome.
Notari currently lives and works in Sora, Lazio.
