Description of the work
Description of the work
The work features an extremely interesting iconography. In an elaborate and complex composition, the artist manages to summarize the history of the city of Gela. Thus, in a series of significant and emblematic images, superimposed in the same space, the work communicates the identity of the Sicilian city, from its Greek roots to its more recent industrial development, including its ever-present fishing industry.
This type of work could only have been created by one of Gela's most important artists, Antonio Occhipinti, a master of watercolor. In this large-scale work, the artist displays all his extraordinary technique in creating extremely concrete images, even using diluted paint. Antonio Occhipinti's style lends itself perfectly to the representational nature of this painting, thanks to its didactic power, expressed in perfect figures that have the clarity of an illustration yet the quality of a painting. Furthermore, the artist is capable of infusing a dynamic rhythm into the composition, alternating highly sculptural figures with others composed of transparent glazes, areas of bright color with monochrome sections.
One of Italy's finest watercolorists, Antonio Occhipinti was born in Gela, where he lives and works. He has participated in numerous national and international exhibitions. His works are held in public and private collections. He has received numerous awards and accolades; critics and the press have always been interested in him. He has organized public works, group exhibitions, and impromptu exhibitions with the Municipality of Gela and other institutions, hosting the most established national and international artists in Gela. Throughout his long artistic career, he has mastered the challenging technique of watercolor. Refined and elegant, Occhipinti's watercolors capture the coloristic sensibility of the South, tempered by a careful modulation of glazes and transparencies.
