Description of the work
Description of the work
Portraiture is one of the most widespread artistic expressions, especially in painting, but also in sculpture, throughout the ages. Portraiture is, first and foremost, a description of the subject depicted, an attempt to capture their physiognomy and individual characteristics truthfully and naturally. With the progressive evolution of artistic research, the physiognomic description of the subject has also been accompanied by a psychological one. Therefore, over the centuries, portraiture has also become a means of introspective investigation of the subject, their character, and their state of mind. The processes of abstraction brought about by contemporary art have contributed to this type of investigation.
In this painting, Antonio Occhipinti demonstrates remarkable pictorial technique, even in oil, allowing him to achieve a perfectly naturalistic rendering of the subject. The subject appears in a slight and very natural three-quarter pose. There is great precision and richness of physiognomic detail in this essential portrait that focuses all attention on the subject's personality. In addition to this meticulous study of character, the painter also stands out for his loose brushstrokes, creating a delicate softness in the modeling. The subject's forms blend seamlessly with the decontextualized space of the background. The use of soft, suffused light is highly skilled, enhancing the subject's sculptural consistency. The demeanor and serious, concentrated expression reveal much of the existential nature of this painting, further confirmed by the dynamic, vibrant pictorial style.
One of Italy's finest watercolorists, Antonio Occhipinti was born in Gela, where he lives and works. He has participated in numerous national and international exhibitions. His works are held in public and private collections. He has received numerous awards and mentions; critics and the press have always been interested in him. He has organized public works, group exhibitions, and impromptu exhibitions with the Municipality of Gela and other institutions, hosting the most established national and international artists in Gela. Throughout his long artistic career, he has mastered the challenging technique of watercolor. Refined and elegant, Occhipinti's watercolors capture the coloristic sensibility of the South, tempered by a careful modulation of glazes and transparencies.
