Antonio Padula - Landscape

Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.

This painting is an excellent example of Antonio Padula's artistic language. He does not view landscape painting as a description of reality but rather as a piece of poetry. For this reason, his views focus on a combination of lines and volumes from which he derives an extremely harmonious and balanced composition. The transfiguration of reality into lyricism also involves a reduction of details to extract, with an expressionist approach, the essence of perceived things. Thus, the small farmhouse and the surrounding countryside are rendered in a superimposition of pure, clear volumes. In this transposition from reality to the purity of emotion, the composition plays a fundamental role. Indeed, the pictorial material is essential in imbuing objects with profound vibrations that almost seem to corrode the surface of things. Vibrations that are luminous and atmospheric, but also, and above all, existential.

Antonio Padula was born in Castellammare di Stabia in 1943. He has been painting since childhood. A philosophy teacher at the Classical High School, he is also a psychologist and psychotherapist specializing in clinical hypnosis. He has explored the potential of creative and spiritual resources for personal growth. He lives and works in Brescia.
