Description of the work
Description of the work
The urban landscape was already a popular subject in the Middle Ages and the Modern Age, but predominantly in an idealized manner. Scenes of city life became typical themes with a more realistic interpretation starting in the 19th century. It's worth remembering how, immediately following the realist movements of the 19th century, the Impressionists also placed great emphasis on the everyday, on everyday life, with a certain predilection, however, for the frenetic pace of the city, the crowds, the traffic, and typically bourgeois settings. In this cityscape by Antonio Placido, the quotidian aspect prevails, the frank and sincere realism of everyday life in a city setting. The human presence is expressed through the narrative of the simplicity of small, habitual gestures.
Artist Antonio Placido's aim is to offer a simplified interpretation of reality or symbolism, seeking new values of purity in representation. For this reason, his painting style can be described as naïve, yet expresses itself in a highly classical and traditional manner. His language, in fact, is essentially figurative and finds its broadest expression in the traditional genres of cityscapes, but also in his bizarre compositions of masks and objects. However, the artist manages to infuse tradition with his originality and personal touch, precisely through his pursuit of purity in representation that defines his style. Concretely, this is expressed in compositions with clean lines and a fluid technique that resolves subjects with a few, quick but incisive strokes. Objects almost dematerialize in the lightness of the glazes. Even in terms of color, the artist favors decidedly pale tones, full of light.
Antonio Placido is a painter born in Foggia in 1951. He began painting in his early school years, initially at the Art School in Melfi and then at the Academy of Fine Arts in Foggia and Urbino. Both in his choice of subjects and his method of execution, we can say that Antonio Placido operates within the realm of classical, figurative art, while also displaying a certain naïve approach to his compositions. His desire to achieve lightness and simplicity in representation is evident, with the aim of imbuing his artwork with primordial values of purity and innocence.
