Surrealist aesthetics emerged around the 1920s and encompassed all fields of artistic research. Specifically, in the visual arts, Surrealism sought to explore the human subconscious and translate it into artwork through a mechanical writing process based on dream analysis. Consequently, Surrealist artworks proposed the representation of a dreamlike dimension, completely dissociated from reality.

Antonio Possenti's surrealism has extremely recognizable characteristics. Unlike the historical surrealists, his painting does not rely on a deliberately fake hyperrealism, but rather on a caricature-like style more closely related to the social satire of the German New Objectivity movement of Grosz and Dix. Possenti, thanks also to his work as an illustrator and cartoonist, is similar to the Germans in terms of iconography and satirical intent, but formally differs, preferring to approach his imaginative world with a more pictorial approach.

Antonio Possenti was an artist born and raised in Lucca (1933-2016). He was a painter, teacher, and illustrator. His artistic career began while teaching law in schools in the province of Lucca, while simultaneously working as a satirical illustrator for the weekly magazine "Il Mondo." In 1957, he met Marc Chagall. His work, both as a painter and illustrator, received numerous awards, with exhibitions both in Italy and abroad.
