Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism. Antonio Saliola's entire production is dedicated to landscapes: his favorite subjects are countryside views, but also urban scenes. He has also created a significant number of works dedicated to home and garden interiors.
Antonio Saliola's style presents a perfect fusion of realism and a delicate impressionistic rendering of sensory details. On the one hand, the artist precisely describes the view in all its details, with a strong sense of urban reality and the everyday life of simple life. On the other, his refined pictorial technique allows him to convey a sense of immediacy to the canvas, thanks to brushstrokes charged with atmospheric vibrations. Light thus reverberates on objects, but without interfering with the precise description of reality, and the artist can modulate the effects of the atmosphere on things with great naturalness. Saliola's sincere realism is also expressed in his choice of a distinctly photographic compositional structure. The framing of his views is always unusual, almost casual. This element, a defining characteristic of this painter's work, enhances the sense of concrete reality, free from idealization.
Antonio Saliola was born in Bologna in 1939, where he still lives and works. Initially an assistant at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna, he then directed the Tempo Gallery until he decided to dedicate himself to painting. In 1972, he began an intense series of solo exhibitions showcasing his pictorial cycles (family groups, interiors, gardens, landscapes). Since 1998, he has exhibited internationally in cities such as Paris, Brussels, London, New York, Chicago, Buenos Aires, Hong Kong, and Monte Carlo.
