Description of the work
Description of the work
The work is part of a series of subjects in which Antonio
Santacroce focuses on the study of the human figure. His main interest
lies in the fact that the figures are interpreted by Santacroce with the
peculiarity of his aesthetics, deriving from a mix of quotationism, surrealism
and metaphysics.
As regards the style, Antonio Santacroce is always aimed at
experiment with a synthetic language. The figures, in fact, are outlined by a
very elegant pictorial layout that investigates the volumes in a form, however,
vibrant and dynamic. The artist's skill lies in his strong personality.
which he manages to give to these figures through the essentiality of the pictorial medium.
The palette is also fundamental and is expressed with light glazes,
harmonious and balanced.
Antonio Santacroce was born in Rosolini in 1945. In 1963 he obtained a
gold medal for painting at the Gemmellaro Institute of Catania. In 1969, he
he moved to Rome, where he came into contact with Swiss artists including J.
Gachnang introduced him to the world of engraving. Having moved to Switzerland,
He worked as a laborer at the Wohlen ironworks. He returned to Catania in 1971.
study the history of art, mathematics and geometry, to deepen
the “harmonic proportions” that he will implement in his artistic works.
He teaches at the Art High School of Catania and engraves his first etchings and
aquatints on a Brissè press. He travels to Germany and Switzerland, studying
great artists such as Bellmer, Kollwitz, Klee and Kandinsky. In 1989 he taught at
Zurich Art School of the Kantonsschule Freudenberg and since 1991 he has lived and
works between Switzerland and Italy.
