Description of the work
Description of the work
The "Still Life" genre emerged in the early 17th century. It consisted of compositions of inanimate subjects, most often flowers or fruit. While initially it was an opportunity for painters to experiment with naturalistic or photographic reproductions of reality, with contemporary art, the "Still Life" also became a way of interpreting reality. Indeed, as happened, for example, in the Cubist avant-garde or in Giorgio Morandi, the in-depth exploration of objects was aimed at a conceptual representation, taken beyond the mere sensory element. The favorite subjects of the Tuscan artist Antonio Sbrana are primarily the Maremma landscape and still lifes.
The painter Antonio Sbrana can be considered a true follower of the Tuscan Macchiaioli pictorial tradition. This is evident primarily in his landscapes, where the brushstrokes of color, in addition to playing a structural role, capture all the subject's luminous and atmospheric vibrations in a highly synthetic and lyrical representation of tangible reality. The same characteristics, however, are found in his still lifes and floral compositions, where Sbrana adds a rational and geometric sense of composition, uniquely Tuscan. The identification of forms in a reasoned and balanced construction brings the artist closer to Cézanne, even if his sense of synthesis is exquisitely post-Macchiaioli. The difference, compared to the Tuscan group, lies rather in his palette, which shows Sbrana's propensity for pale, suffused, and soft tones, as opposed to the earthy hues of the Macchiaioli.
Antonio Sbrana was born in Maremma in 1934, where he spent most of his life. After completing his academic studies, he founded the Toscana Arte G. Macchi group, and later participated in the Accademia Tiburtina in Rome and the Accademia del Fiorino in Florence. Throughout his career, Antonio Sbrana held numerous solo exhibitions in Italy's major cities. He also received numerous prestigious art awards and recognitions. Antonio Sbrana's works are held in collections in countries such as the United States, Italy, England, Scotland, Africa, Canada, Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands, Romania, Bulgaria, France, Austria, and Switzerland.
