Description of the work
Description of the work
The manner in which the subject was depicted draws on hyperrealist currents. Hyperrealism aims for a completely objective representation of reality: the artist's desire is to reproduce what he sees before his eyes without any interpretation. In this sense, the hyperrealist aesthetic also constitutes a paradox, often consciously sought by artists. Indeed, thanks also to the use of very aggressive techniques, inspired by the world of advertising, and the use of bright color palettes, a rendering of the naturalistic element is achieved so pure as to appear illusory, deliberately fake.
Antonio Sciacca's painting style is entirely devoted to hyperrealism. Objective reality is depicted with cold clarity in every detail. Sciacca's technique has a Flemish precision in translating the quality of materials and the effects of incident light onto the canvas. In this painting, Sciacca's illusions are not limited to perfectly reproducing objects against a black background (the books and the mask appearing in the open space on the wall). In this painting, the Catanian painter's imitative play achieves the perfect reproduction of a Roman fresco, characterized by its antique patina and signs of decay.
A Catania-born painter born in 1957, Antonio Sciacca founded the Metropolismo movement in Bologna in the 1990s, which addressed the social issues of consumerism and designer labels as status symbols. The group's exhibitions in Madrid and at the Museo del Risorgimento in Rome, with the participation of Achille Bonito Oliva, were particularly significant. Sciacca's work is also followed by Vittorio Sgarbi. His pictorial language is based on a lucidly objective hyperrealism and a celebration of the plasticity of objects.
