Portraiture is one of the most widespread artistic expressions, especially in painting, but also in sculpture, throughout the ages. Portraiture is, first and foremost, a description of the subject depicted, an attempt to capture their physiognomy and individual characteristics truthfully and naturally. With the progressive evolution of artistic research, the physiognomic description of the subject has also been accompanied by a psychological one. Therefore, over the centuries, portraiture has also become a means of introspective investigation of the subject, their character, and their state of mind. The processes of abstraction brought about by contemporary art have contributed to this type of investigation.

Nino Traverso's paintings fit perfectly into a pictorial movement that combines realist themes with a predominantly symbolist language. Indeed, if the subject is a concrete portrait (perhaps the face of Christ), the style envisions a synthetic interpretation of reality. In a decontextualized space, everything is simplified to transfigure reality in an expressive and symbolic sense. The process of abstraction, therefore, is conducted by the painter to extract the essence from sensory data. The subject is thus resolved in a highly plastic, almost metaphysical construction. In this way, Traverso creates an image charged with primary, immutable values, thanks to its expressive simplicity and chromatic power. Light invades the scene, further crystallizing it in a timeless dimension.

Domenico Traverso, known as Nino, was born in Genoa in 1922. Descended from a family of painters, from Niccolò Traverso (active in the eighteenth century) to his uncles Mattia and Antonino, he began painting as a self-taught artist at the age of twenty. He lived abroad for many years, particularly in Ethiopia, Somalia, Mozambique, Angola, and the Congo, as well as in Milan, where he exhibited several times at the Galleria Elba, the Circolo del Dialogo, and the Bottega del Pittore. In Genoa, where he lived, he exhibited at the Galleria San Matteo. He won numerous awards, including the Raffaello Sanzio Prize (1964, 1965); the Dante Prize (1966); and the Il Quadrato Prize (1970). He painted symbolic and allegorical subjects, often influenced by the atmosphere of metaphysical painting and a marked inclination toward the surreal. He died in Genoa in 1980.
