Description of the work
Description of the work
Waterscapes are an unusual subject in the history of art. The earliest examples can be found in some Roman mosaics. They are very common in the work of Natalino Arfelli. Paintings depicting sailing ships, however, can be considered genre scenes. In particular, the depiction of simple sailing ships, or other vessels, outside the historical context of a naval battle, began in the 17th and 18th centuries, influenced by travel and exploration of new continents.
In his paintings featuring aquatic landscapes or marine themes, Natalino Arfelli demonstrates a masterful execution, interpreting marine flora and fauna in a lively and vital manner. Indeed, the painter isn't so much interested in a realistic interpretation of the subject; he doesn't linger to analyze the effects of water or capture its moisture. Rather, he offers a more subjective interpretation, aiming to create a composition that is vibrant in color and intriguing in content.
Natalino Arfelli (1922) is undoubtedly an academically trained painter who places great importance on drawing and the possibilities of modeling and investigating plastic values. His style favors broad layers of bright colors that allow the figures to stand out clearly within the composition.
