Description of the work
10 silver tiles
The series of panels is a reproduction of the famous Gates of Paradise, the east entrance to the Baptistery of Florence, created by Lorenzo Ghiberti between 1425 and 1452. The panels depict stories inspired by the first books of the Old Testament, from the creation of Adam to the story of David and Solomon. It is one of the most important works of the early Italian Renaissance, the originals of which are now preserved in the nearby Museo dell'Opera del Duomo. The collection presented here consists of a series of 10 panels that faithfully reproduce Lorenzo Ghiberti's originals on a smaller scale, in precious silver bas-relief reproductions.
The interest and importance of this collection lies precisely in its faithful reproduction of Lorenzo Ghiberti's famous work. We find, therefore, the same characteristics that made the Gates of Paradise in the Florence Baptistery a fundamental stage in the transition from late Gothic to Renaissance artistic styles. Indeed, Lorenzo Ghiberti was the figure who could best be considered a true watershed moment in 15th-century sculpture. It is clear, even from these panels, that his artistic vision was fully aligned with a return to classicism typical of the cultural phase of Humanism. His scenes are clearly inspired by Greek and Roman sculpture, especially in the anatomical definition of the bodies, which pursue a coherent ideal of classical beauty. However, the still-strong late Gothic legacy is deeply rooted in Ghiberti, in a predominantly ornamental conception of the work, in which the entire space of the panels is filled with elements, without regard for a rational measurement based on Brunelleschi's perspective. It is here that the distance between the young Brunelleschi and the older master is measured, and which constitutes the specificity of Ghiberti's style. Ghiberti's greatness lies precisely in this dynamic, lively style and in the elegantly Gothic decorative mastery that blends perfectly with the classical perfection of the scenes' subjects.
The panels were created by Argenteria Morpier, a historic Florentine manufacturer that, for over 50 years, has crafted beautiful gold jewelry, elegant home silver collections, and stunning reproductions of works of art in silver and gold, such as Ghiberti's "Gates of Paradise," Cellini's "Golden Salt Cellar," and Leonardo's "The Man." Each creation by Argenteria Morpier is an exquisite Florentine artisan, entirely handcrafted using the same processes used in 16th-century goldsmith workshops, and is therefore limited to a limited number of pieces.
