Giuseppe Arigliano - Calm in the Stream

Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a constant aspiration for painters. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the 16th century; up until the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism. The "seascape" in particular is a recurring theme among artists. First, for the lyricism implicit in views overlooking the sea or in romantic images of small harbors. Second, because the depiction of aquatic surfaces allows painters to give free rein to their chromatic flair, thanks to refined interplays of reflections and reverberations.

Compared to the naturalist painting to which he clearly refers, in this painting Giuseppe Arigliano introduces a more contemporary sensibility. This is particularly evident in the form of an impressionistic approach that seeks to capture every subtle vibration of color, light, and atmosphere. In this way, the pictorial film becomes extremely lively and alive, in a landscape lyricism that thrives not only on the perfection of the naturalistic rendering, but also on the expressive power of color and painterly gesture.

Giuseppe Arigliano was born in 1917 in Genoa, where he lived and worked as a professional painter from 1946 until his death in 1999. After attending courses at the Linguistic Academy of Fine Arts in his hometown, he participated in numerous important national and international exhibitions and shows, earning awards and mentions.
He has held solo exhibitions in various Italian cities, receiving both public and critical acclaim. His paintings are highly regarded and admired by highly respected art experts. His works are also held in public and private collections, both nationally and internationally, as well as on the Italian Navy's frigates, "Zeffiro," "Scirocco," "Sibilla," "Vieste," and others.
From 1967 to 1989 he took part in numerous events, winning many awards, particularly in the exhibitions organised on board the cruise ships of the Costa Armatori company of Genoa.
