Description of the work
Description of the work
The iconographic subject of Christ's face has ancient origins and is connected to the legend of Veronica. The episode in which Christ's true likeness was imprinted on a cloth used by a woman to wipe his face is also recounted in the Gospels. This woman was identified as Veronica, likely due to the similarity with the Latin words "Vera Icon." Since the early Christian era, the face of Christ has been the object of particular veneration. Its depiction has pervaded the entire history of Western art. From the first iconic representations of the early Christian and early Middle Ages, we gradually moved on to increasingly naturalistic (starting in the Renaissance) or realistic (typical of Flemish art) depictions.
Even in this painting, where the face of Jesus is the protagonist, Aristodemo Capecchi does not abandon his distinctive landscape painting, strongly influenced by post-Impressionism. Thus, the Holy Face is immersed in a space constructed according to Capecchi's complex compositional style, which leverages the expressive qualities of color. Even the depiction of Jesus is adapted to an elaborate composition, which takes on almost expressionistic traits.
Aristodemo Capecchi was a renowned painter from Pistoia who lived between 1917 and 2017. He trained in his hometown and exhibited his work both in Italy and abroad. He held solo exhibitions in the United States and Japan, and in cities such as Lugano, Panama, Tokyo, Berlin, Nuremberg, Munich, Vienna, Toronto, Paris, Madrid, Dubrovnik, and Nice. In 2002, an anthology of his work was held in his native Pistoia. Capecchi received over 350 awards during his career. His works are held in both public and private collections.
