Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a constant aspiration for painters. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the 16th century; up until the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism. The "seascape" in particular is a recurring theme among artists. First, for the lyricism implicit in views overlooking the sea or in romantic images of small harbors. Second, because the depiction of aquatic surfaces allows painters to give free rein to their chromatic flair, thanks to refined interplays of reflections and reverberations.

Armando Romano's works demonstrate the artist's post-Impressionist maturity. The composition is compressed entirely into the foreground, allowing no spatial depth. The painter's aim is not to capture the sensory aspect of the subject, but to capture its very essence, its substance. To this end, the brushstroke, rich in texture, intervenes, fleshing out the objects, breaking them down into different planes, recording the vibrations of light and life within them. The sensory aspect, therefore, is completely transcended in a complex conception of pictorial practice in which the artist's gestures themselves play a fundamental role. Furthermore, we find in Romano a certain tendency to structure things according to geometric principles that hark back to Cézanne. Chromatically, the entire surface of the work is harmonized according to a balanced palette of references and correspondences.

Armando Romano was born in Naples in 1953. He is an artist devoted to fairly traditional genres, such as landscape. His style shows strong ties to the Posillipo School but tends toward post-impressionism, with some influence from the French artist Paul Cézanne.
