Armao - Fishermen

We are faced with an everyday subject, an almost genre scene that narrates the daily life of fishermen. We glimpse a small boat on the shore with people intent on their work, as if leaving or returning. This type of scene has been found since the landscape paintings of the seventeenth century, although only later do these depictions begin to take on a life of their own. These scenes, which narrate the lives of simple and humble people, allow us to identify with realities different from our own, making us active participants.

The work's style is realistic; the painter renders the scene with simple, dry brushstrokes. Dry because he uses very little color, applied in very thin layers on the canvas, which in some places even shines through. This choice can be considered deliberate and helps to convey a scene that is simple yet full of life and energy. The color scheme, like the subject depicted, is sparse, and the overall effect is primarily depicted in browns and blues, creating an almost uniform background of sea and sky, thus perhaps depicting not only the infinity of the universe but also the repetitiveness of the daily lives of the painting's actors.
