Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.
The style of artist Armeno Mattioli presents a perfect fusion of realism and a delicate, impressionistic rendering of sensory details. On the one hand, the artist precisely describes the view in all its details, with a strong sense of rural reality and the everyday life of simple life. On the other, his refined painting technique allows him to convey a sense of immediacy to the canvas, thanks to rapid brushstrokes charged with atmospheric vibrations. Light thus reverberates across objects, yet without interfering with the precise depiction of reality. The entire view is thus characterized by a clear luminosity that is revealed, by contrast, in the play of shadows. The use of a palette of soft, delicate colors also serves this purpose.
Armeno Mattioli was born in 1920 in Vicchio di Mugello. From a young age, he showed a marked predilection for drawing and painting, a natural talent that blossomed when he met the painter Ferruccio Rontini, who had lived in Mugello for many years. Early in his artistic career, Mattioli was called up for military service during World War II and sent to fight in Greece. At the end of the conflict, he returned to Italy, to Vicchio, where, with interruptions for travels to Greece, he lived until 1953-54. He subsequently established his residence in Athens. In his native Mugello, a retrospective exhibition of his work was held in the Casa di Giotto in 1984. He exhibited in major Italian and international cities. Numerous art critics have written about him. His works are held in public and private collections worldwide. He died in Greece in 2010.
