Description of the work
Description of the work
The devastation wrought by World War II left a profound mark on Western civilization, which in the visual arts also resulted in an inability to communicate. For some artists, this challenge led to a complete rejection of any visual language, which led to the birth of Informal Art. The various Informal movements are certainly connected to American Abstract Expressionism, especially with regard to the gestural component, but they go further in their rejection of any figurative element, even geometric. Their exploration focuses instead on the materials from which their works are composed.
Even in a relief work, Arnaldo Pomodoro reflects the aesthetic principles that made his solids in the round famous. The principle is always the same: to go beyond the smooth and polished surface to discover a complex, mechanomorphic world. The cut, the gash, or the crack allow the viewer to see inside, to find themselves in a new dimension, intricate and rational, that the purity of the external surface in no way suggests. For Pomodoro, therefore, the hermeticism and incommunicability, typical of the Informal aesthetic, reside beneath the surface of things.
Arnaldo Pomodoro was born in Morciano di Romagna in 1936. Brother of Giò Pomodoro, he is considered one of Italy's greatest sculptors and goldsmiths. He initially studied surveying, then turned to sculpture, which he pursued especially in the 1950s. Since 1954, he has lived and worked in Milan. In the 1960s, he was part of the "Continuità" group, along with Lucio Fontana. He is the creator of public works in numerous cities.
