Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism. This work is a beautiful example of contemporary Japanese art, which, even in its choice of subject, draws on iconographic themes typical of that artistic genre. Indeed, the view is very traditional, with the image of snow-capped Mount Fuji in the background and typical elements of the Japanese landscape in the foreground: the pagoda, the small bridge, and the peach blossoms.
Although contemporary, the work reflects traditional Japanese artistic practice not only in its subject matter but also in its style. The formal aspect, in fact, harks back to that of ancient prints, of which we can recognize some characteristic elements. First, the construction of space, which is based not on a perspective view but, rather, on a superimposition of elements. Furthermore, the calligraphic manner of describing objects is typical, with a subtle drawing and a dematerialization of volumes. Everything appears essentially two-dimensional and light, as in the finest Japanese pictorial tradition. However, there are elements in this work that can be traced back to a more marked contemporary era. In particular, a more accentuated synthesis and abstraction of the elements, as well as the use of bright, almost electric colors, in a marked expressionist vein.
The work is unsigned, but from its analysis we can see that the artist is a very interesting and original figure, who manages to combine with great balance the Japanese pictorial tradition with strong elements of contemporary expressionism.
