Description of the work
Description of the work
The Archangel Gabriel is one of the central figures of the three Abrahamic religions (Christian, Jewish, and Muslim). He is the angel of the Annunciation, which is why he has always enjoyed great iconographic popularity throughout the history of art. In Byzantine art, he is one of the most frequently depicted subjects, along with the Archangel Michael. Iconographically, he is always depicted as an angel, that is, a winged, androgynous figure.
The panel is an excellent example of Byzantine art, reflecting all its characteristics. Byzantine art retains all its strongly archaic stylistic features, aimed at exalting the supernatural and divine nature of what is depicted. For this reason, the panel exhibits a marked anti-naturalism, still reminiscent of the Middle Ages. The conception of space is not rational, there are no regular proportions, and the subjects appear very elongated. The facial features are generalized, and the gazes are lost in contemplation of the divine. These are all elements that contribute to the work's transcendent aura. Formally, a marked linearism prevails over a substantially two-dimensional and abstract surface represented by the golden background.
Although it is difficult to date and place the artist who created this work, it can nevertheless be considered that this painting presents some traits of modernization compared to the most ancient phase of Byzantine art but always remaining within the framework of its most exquisite tradition.
