Description of the work
Description of the work
The iconography of this painting is inspired by the subject of the Madonna and Child. It is probably one of the most popular iconographies in the history of both Western and Eastern art. The Madonna and Child appears since the dawn of medieval painting and remained a constant subject as long as religious themes dominated artistic production (that is, until the 19th century, when themes inspired by everyday life began to be introduced). In this work, the subject of the Madonna and Child is accompanied by a large number of saints.
The panel is an excellent example of Byzantine art, reflecting all its characteristics. Byzantine art retains all its strongly archaic stylistic features, aimed at exalting the supernatural and divine nature of what is depicted. For this reason, the panel exhibits a marked anti-naturalism, still reminiscent of the Middle Ages. The conception of space is non-rational, there are no regular proportions between the subjects, and the background is gilded. The Madonna and Child, in the central depiction, has a hieratic pose, a superhuman fixity. The facial features are generalized, and the gazes are lost in contemplation of the divine. These are all elements that contribute to the work's transcendental aura.
Although it is difficult to date and place the artist who created this work, it can nevertheless be considered that this painting presents some traits of modernization compared to the most ancient phase of Byzantine art but always remaining within the framework of its most exquisite tradition.
