Description of the work
Description of the work
A popular iconography throughout the history of Western art, the Crucifixion has its origins in the early Christian era and has developed over the centuries, culminating in the most recent expressions of contemporary art. The traditional iconography of Jesus on the cross has infinite variations, from the simplest, accompanied only by the "mourners"—the Madonna and St. John the Evangelist—to the occasion for large choral scenes. It is often accompanied by symbolic elements, such as the presence of the sun and moon or Adam's skull beneath Christ's cross. In this case, we have a version featuring the grieving Magdalene, recognizable by her long red hair and the jar of ointment (with which she anointed Jesus' feet), her traditional iconographic attributes.
The artist who executed this painting follows a very traditional style. Regarding the figure of the crucified Christ, we note a certain desire for realism in the depiction of his emaciated body, his wounds, and, above all, the expression of human suffering. The Magdalene, on the other hand, follows a more traditional model; in keeping with the principles of Renaissance naturalism, she appears in a more idealized pose and a plasticity that reveals a certain monumentality in her proportions.
The author of this painting can be identified as a nineteenth-century painter who followed the pictorial tradition of seventeenth-century Grand Naturalism, which he reworked with very simple formal means. This is why he could be identified as an exponent of some local school. The artist, in fact, displays a remarkable technique that allows him to achieve excellent naturalistic renderings, but shows less attention to atmospheric rendering and painterly effects.
