Description of the work
Description of the work
The subject of the Madonna is probably one of the most popular iconographies throughout the history of both Western and Eastern art, most often represented with the iconographic motif of the Madonna and Child. The Madonna appears since the dawn of medieval painting and remained a constant subject as long as religious themes dominated artistic production (that is, until the 19th century when themes inspired by everyday life began to be introduced). In the case of this work, the iconographic elements indicate that it is a Madonna Annunciate. The Virgin is depicted in her home, traditionally before a lectern, while being enlightened by the Holy Spirit.
The work interprets the subject of the Madonna Annunciata with a highly classicist spirit. The artist, in fact, executes the work according to the values of harmony and balance typical of the Italian tradition. This inspiration from classicism and Renaissance values can also be deduced from the artist's pursuit of monumentality in his figure and an exaltation of volume and space.
The artist who executed this work can be identified as a worthy representative of the 18th-century classicist style. This is evident in the work's formal balance, evident in both the composition and the pictorial style, which maintains a harmony and rigor still close to Renaissance naturalism. Likewise, the calm sentiments expressed in the overall atmosphere of the work, which harks back to an intimate and domestic religious conception, are typical of the classicist movement, in stark contrast to the excesses of the Baroque.
