Description of the work
Description of the work
The work's iconography reflects the widespread subject of Italian painting, the "Mystic Marriage of Saint Catherine." The scene depicts the saint receiving a wedding ring from the Baby Jesus in the Virgin's lap. The subject harks back to sources that relate the story of Saint Catherine, such as the 13th-century Golden Legend. Catherine was an Egyptian princess with many suitors, all of whom she rejected, claiming she had received the ring in a dream and had been consecrated to Christ. In the present work, the scene is very clear. The Infant Saint John, recognizable by the animal skin he wears, is also included, a character not essential to this subject. Saint Catherine, however, lacks her traditional iconographic attributes, the palm of martyrdom and the cogwheel.
The engraving is a highly representative work of the Mannerist cultural sphere. This is evident from the way the composition is almost entirely occupied by the figures (on one side, Saint Catherine, on the other, the Madonna and Child), leaving almost no space for nature (which only makes a cameo in the opening in the background). The Mannerist influence is evident first and foremost from the refinement of the clothing and hairstyles. The figures also exhibit a monumentality reminiscent of Michelangelo, but expressed through an artificial and unnatural elongation of proportions, typical of the second phase of the 16th century.
The engraving's iconography, as confirmed by the Zeri Foundation catalogue, was inspired by Primaticcio, a Bolognese painter who lived between 1504 and 1507. Indeed, all the stylistic features outlined suggest a Mannerist artist, active in the second half of the 16th century, from the Emilian region. In addition to the model taken from Primaticcio, this painting also confirms its stylistic similarity to Parmigianino, whose hairstyles and monumental proportions the artist imitates.
