Description of the work
Description of the work
The work's iconography reflects the widespread subject of Italian painting, the "Mystic Marriage of Saint Catherine." The scene depicts the saint receiving a wedding ring from the Baby Jesus in the Virgin's lap. The subject harks back to sources that chronicle the story of Saint Catherine, such as the 13th-century Golden Legend. Catherine was an Egyptian princess with many suitors, all of whom she rejected, claiming she had received the ring in a dream and had been consecrated to Christ. In the present work, the scene is clearly depicted. Saint Catherine, dressed as a princess, lacks her traditional iconographic attributes, the palm of martyrdom and the cogwheel.
The overall language of the work demonstrates a marked pursuit of monumentality in its representation: the subjects, in fact, are composed of significantly dilated volumes, enhanced by the ample draperies of their garments. This pursuit of monumentality, and consequently, a broad, classical scope, places the work in question within a 16th-century Renaissance context. Consistent with this contextualization is the scene's setting against a lush landscape. Formally, the artist displays excellent technique in defining a complex work, expressed through a multitude and variety of gestures. The figures' movements are free and fluid, and the volumes are inserted naturally into the space, despite the composition's conspicuous crowding.
On a chromatic level, the classicist spirit of the work is respected by a perfect tonal coherence, set on a sulphurous and golden atmosphere.
From an analysis of this work, we can see that the artist who painted it is aligned with a Renaissance and Classicist aesthetic. He possesses an excellent technique in defining monumental forms enhanced by ample draperies. A certain disharmony, evident in the crowded composition, leads us to outline the profile of a representative of a local sixteenth-century school, nevertheless endowed with great pictorial skill.
