Description of the work
Description of the work
The Nativity scene, associated with one of the most important Christian holidays, is one of the most popular subjects in the history of Western art. It was widely popular until religious art gained dominance. Iconographically, the main focus is on the figures of Mary, Baby Jesus, and Saint Joseph, usually depicted in isolation. According to tradition, the event is always set in a hut or cave, accompanied by an ox and a donkey. There are several variations that incorporate the Nativity theme, especially the Adoration of the Shepherds and the Adoration of the Magi. The Nativity scene is, in most cases, accompanied by the appearance of angelic hosts.
The work presents a very rigid structure, entirely hinged on a central axis along which the figures are arranged symmetrically. This type of arrangement gives the composition a certain rigidity of archaic taste. It can be said that the entire work is characterized by a certain simplicity of execution, in the subjects' lack of fluidity in movement. The space also appears essentially two-dimensional. The drapes of the robes appear softer and more natural, and the figures of the ox and donkey are characterized by a spontaneous liveliness.
The artist of the work can probably be dated to the 17th or 18th century. The execution, which displays a certain rigidity and archaism compared to the period in which the work was produced, suggests an artist from a local school of working-class origins. We are therefore faced with a precious testimony to intimate and domestic religiosity.
