Description of the work
Description of the work
The subject of the work is based on a remarkable bas-relief by Desiderio da Settignano, one of the most important sculptors of the 15th-century Renaissance. The sculpture, housed in the Bargello National Museum in Florence, depicts a young Saint John the Baptist, already equipped with his principal iconographic attributes: the staff with the cross and the robe made of animal skins.
The sculpture presented here fully respects the original model. The key characteristic of a Renaissance sculpture is the naturalistic rendering that this bas-relief achieves through a true representation of the subject's facial features. The entire composition is built on principles of balance and harmony typical of fifteenth-century art. The profile view is typical of that era and demonstrates a residual medieval conception.
The artist who created this copy after Desiderio da Settignano demonstrates excellent technique in respecting the Renaissance model.
